There seems to be a possibility for Sony to re-introduce Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 owners, through an emulator whom can essentially by using the Playstation 3′s Cell to emulate Playstation 2′s “Emotion Engine”, without any extra needs of an external/internal-hardware.
Playstation 3 initially had already some hardware capable of backwards capability with prior Sony consoles, which they later had to remove, due to the pricing, and the full backwards compatibility to the Playstation 2 was ultimately lost to consumers, and thus the key selling point of the Playstation 3.
Whether this was an clever move or not, could be debated, however, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the on going popularity of the Playstation 2, with XBOX 360 & Playstation 3 ports making their way to Playstation 2, even having it’s own on going exclusivity with games such as, Persona. So if a simple firmware update could bring back those glorious days of year 2000, it would most likely give the consumers a reason to finally let their old friend rest and boost the sales for Sony’s latest console installment.
