While it’s not entirely hard to come by, the Japanese shopping streets, “shōtengai,” are more and more becoming a rarity in many places through out the country. They have become more and more deserted and almost ghost like in a way only the Japanese horror movies can truly bring out, unlike how they used to be before, a representation of the welfare and growing economy of the Japan.
But now a days, they’re more seen as a clear sign that the economic issue the country is facing and that the Japanese demography are heading towards bigger urbanization, leaving behind on these emptied streets along with it’s street shopping malls.
With that said, it’s not that all are moving away, just the younger generation whom prefer all prefer the big city life over the small town one and a better economical leg. What more is giving arise to a situation such as this, are the more highly conventional convenience stores and large scale high street chains to the uncompetitive vendors offer practically the same items if not more.
